Moorland air
Tweed, trench coats, chunky jumpers: autumn is a whole other countryside.
There is a weekend vibe in Suffolk in the most interesting looks of the season. But forget the cliché of excursions in wellies and puffer jackets: the new English countryside aesthetic is all style and zero boredom. The garments seem to have been stolen from the wardrobe of rural aristocracy, but revisited with urban cuts and couture details. Even though Barbour’s wax jackets and Burberry’s quilted coats are still among the most coveted pieces, the stars of this autumn/winter season are trench coats and tweed coats, often double-breasted or with military-style, such as those seen at Chloé and Burberry; to be worn over chunky wool cable-knit jumpers — try the versions by Bottega Veneta or Loro Piana — also perfect under wide-shouldered men’s blazers as proposed by Saint Laurent. Pleated midi-skirts are back, paired with riding boots like those in glossy leather by Bottega Veneta. Check out Max Mara’s structured skirts and The Row’s minimal knitwear. For those who like to be daring, the all-over check print is also making a strong comeback: wear it head-to-toe, like Ralph Lauren or Burberry do, or in small doses, perhaps with an oversized scarf. Colours? Moorland shades: khaki, melange grey, rust, cream, undergrowth green. Materials: thick wool, flannel, compact cashmere, technical gabardine. A castle-on-the-hill aesthetic, with a metropolitan touch. And a men’s blazer worn with boots and a scarf tied in the hair could become your new autumn uniform.
